Springtime is here once again. The flowers are in full bloom, butterflies are fluttering about and the store shelves are filling up with stuffed bunnies and Easter eggs; but let's not lose sight of the real reason we celebrate Easter. In addition to all your Easter festivities this season, don't forget to teach your children about Jesus and what he did for us; and I don't mean just bring them to church and let them color a picture of a cross and post images on social media that say "He has Risen!" and move on about your day.
Take the time to teach your children "at home" why Jesus came and the significance of the cross. He didn't just die on a cross so that we could be good little Christians and go to heaven one day. Yes, that's part of it - but there is so much more to that story. Jesus paid an awesome price so you and I can be restored back into God's family (John 1:12-13) and with that comes everything we need as a child of God to live successfully and enjoy everyday life! Isn't that awesome! Just as a natural king's child has access to his/her father's kingdom and everything in it, once we accept Jesus, we too have access to everything in the Kingdom of God and we don't have to wait until we get to heaven to enjoy it! That's a big deal and Jesus is the key to it all.
The earlier we teach our children this and who they are in Christ and what belongs to them, the easier it is to raise our children to become the respectful young men and women we as parents want them to be. Proverbs 22:6 says. "Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it;" When our children have a better understanding as to why we make the choices we make as Christians and they see that example set before them as parents - not just at church but at home. They no longer base their decisions on "because mom and dad said so" - they now have that strong foundation of the word and have been taught (2 Timothy 3:14-16) what the bible says about their choices and how to make them.
As a bonus, not only do we end up with respectful children whose lives are built on a foundation of faith, but we become stronger as a family and when those teenage years come about, they will have no problem opening up to you when they need you the most. Even better, they will carry that on in their own families one day leaving a legacy of faith that will continue to be passed down for generations to come.
